B.A. University of Western Ontario 1965 (Zoology); M.D. University of Western Ontario 1970; M.B.A. University of Toronto 1991. FRCPC Internal Medicine 1974; FRCPC Neurology 1976. Fellow in Clinical Pharmacology 1974-76 at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, University of California at San Francisco. Established a Hypertension Clinic at Victoria Hospital in 1977; moved to the Robarts Research Institute in 1995. Areas of research have included Clinical Pharmacology of hypertension, carotid atherosclerosis, and effects of grapefruit on drug metabolism.
Continuous funding from the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario since 1977; funding from NIH (NASCET, ACAS, ACE, VISP, IRIS trials) and CIHR (DIVINe 2000-2006; Subclinical hypothyroidism and carotid atherosclerosis 2006-2009; Advanced MRI imaging of carotid atherosclerosis - with Dr. Brian Rutt, 2005-2010).
Current research focus is on measurement of carotid plaque by ultrasound for patient management, genetic research and evaluation of new therapies. Assistant Editor of Stroke; member of the Editorial Boards of Hypertension and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. Fellow of the American Heart Association Stroke Council since 1986; member of the AHA Stroke Council Leadership Committee 2003-2006. Author of 154 peer-reviewed publications, and a book for the public published by Vanderbilt University Press, 2006: How to Prevent Your Stroke.
