This year's Drug Therapy Day sponsored by the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Western Ontario, will be held on Wednesday April 18, 2012 at the Lamplighter Inn London. This conference has been held annually for the past 35 years. Many physicians and pharmacists from Southwestern Ontario have attended this conference on a regular basis and the feedback is that the conference provides important and timely information regarding optimal drug therapy. As in previous years, our goal is to cover emerging areas of interest to the practicing physicians and pharmacists, by bringing in expert physicians and pharmacists as speakers. This year we are focusing on the following:

  • To describe the current therapeutic options for a number of neurological conditions - anti-epileptic medications, migraine therapy, multiple sclerosis, and movement disorders.
  • To appreciate therapeutic issues of relevance to children such as unintentional medication administration, emerging concerns regarding codeine usage, and increasing rates of diabetes and depression.
  • To describe key issues surrounding the use of drugs in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • To outline the impact of changes in opiate prescribing for physicians and pharmacists in Ontario, to review the role of medications in the management of sleep problems, risks for infection and cancer associated with the use of biologics, toxicological consequences of new drugs on the street, and the role of herbal medications for patients with mental health problems.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by Continuing Professional Development, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, The University of Western Ontario. (6.0 hours). This program meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for up to 6.0 MAINPRO-M1 credits. The cost of registering is modest and will include continental breakfast and a buffet style lunch. We hope to see you at the conference on April 18th.
